Stereotyping at work

CHALLENGING STEREOTYPES AT WORK. Stereotypes are a common but damaging force in the workplace. They shape how we perceive others, often leading to assumptions based on characteristics like age, gender, race, or disability. These biases can hinder diversity, limit opportunities, and cause organisations to overlook the unique strengths of their employees. A recent Straits Times podcast explored these issues with Dr Issac Lim, sociologist and founder of Anthro Insights, shedding light on the pervasive impact of workplace stereotypes and the steps organisations can take to overcome them.
Dr Issac Lim framed stereotypes as cognitive shortcuts or heuristics—mental tools our brains use to simplify decision-making. However, while helpful in certain contexts, these heuristics can lead to oversimplified or prejudicial assumptions. For example, Dr Lim highlighted stereotypes surrounding people with disabilities, noting that many assume disabilities are limited to physical impairments, such as wheelchair use. This narrow perspective ignores the vast diversity of disabilities and the unique skills these individuals can bring to the workplace.
Dr Lim also shared his personal experiences as someone with dyslexia and a hearing impairment, explaining how these challenges have shaped his problem-solving abilities and capacity to navigate complex situations. He emphasised that employees with disabilities often develop extraordinary skills to adapt to their circumstances, which can be an asset to organisations willing to move beyond stereotypes and recognise their potential.
One of Dr Lim’s key arguments was the need for systemic changes rather than isolated diversity training sessions. He noted that while many organisations implement training to reduce unconscious bias, research shows these initiatives are often ineffective and can sometimes backfire. Instead, Dr Lim advocated for structural interventions, such as redesigning recruitment processes, creating mentorship programmes, and fostering environments where diverse perspectives are not only welcomed but integrated into decision-making.
At Anthro Insights, we believe that challenging stereotypes and embracing diversity can unlock the full potential of employees and drive organisational success. By fostering inclusive workplaces that recognise individual strengths, organisations can cultivate a more innovative, engaged, and high-performing workforce. Let’s take the first step toward breaking down these barriers and building a future of work where everyone’s contributions are valued.
