NAVIGATING THE RETURN TO OFFICE. As companies like Grab and Amazon transition back to a five-day in-office workweek, the debate over optimal work arrangements intensifies. These organisations cite enhanced communication, collaboration, and productivity as reasons for moving away from hybrid models. However, this shift contrasts with employee preferences; a recent survey indicates that 82% of workers favour flexible working hours.

Dr Issac Lim, founder of Anthro Insights warns that enforcing strict return-to-office (RTO) policies may reduce the talent pool willing to work for such firms. He suggests that rigid schedules could undermine work-life balance, prompting high performers to seek opportunities elsewhere. Dr Lim also notes that larger companies might use mandatory office returns as a subtle strategy to reduce staff without direct layoffs, as some employees may choose to resign rather than comply with the new requirements.

At Anthro Insights, we advocate for flexible work arrangements that accommodate diverse employee needs and promote productivity. Dr Lim's observations highlight the importance of balancing organisational goals with employee wellbeing to foster a motivated and committed workforce.
