MISMATCH BETWEEN EMPLOYER AND EMPLOYEE EXPECTATIONS. Dr Issac Lim, sociologist and founder of Anthro Insights drew attention to the growing disconnect between employer and employee expectations around remote and flexible work arrangements. Recent surveys show that Singapore has one of the largest mismatches globally, with only 23% of workers desiring a full return to office, compared to 44% of bosses expecting the same within three years.
Dr Lim stresses that rigid return-to-office mandates fail to account for the diverse needs of employees, particularly working parents and those seeking work-life balance. He notes:
Flexibility in work arrangements is not just a perk; it is integral to productivity, well-being, and talent retention.
The data also indicates that hybrid work models can better address employee needs while still fostering in-office collaboration. As companies like Amazon move towards stricter office attendance policies, Dr Lim warns of the risk of alienating a workforce increasingly prioritising autonomy and flexibility. He advocates for tailored workplace solutions that align with organisational goals while addressing the realities of modern employees’ lives.
Anthro Insights continues to support organisations in designing people-centric policies that balance productivity with employee satisfaction.
